Buildings

The land of the Casa de Portinari Museum has an area of 1674 m2 and has three buildings occupying about 490 m2: the house where the painter Candido Portinari lived in childhood and in seasons when he was an adult, a little house and a small chapel. These constructions and the mural paintings made by the artist on some of the walls are considered state and national historical and artistic heritage.

In the buildings, the walls have mud bricks, the tiles are of the colonial and Marseille type, in addition to having wooden lining and lambrequins, floors with hydraulic floor tiles, doors, windows and finishes of various types.

The first rooms of the main house were built around 1900; until the 1950s, the family made renovations to increase the spaces. The little house was built as a residence for one of the artist’s grandmothers and the chapel, made in the 1940s, is decorated with a series of wall paintings.

All these buildings received minor adaptations in 1970 for use as a museum. In 2013, the houses were restored and the facades were painted with one of the various colors used by the Portinari family over time.

The museum also has a neighboring property and a plot of land in the back. The neighboring property has 697 m2 area and 106 m2 small house, which houses an exhibition, a collection storage room and a book collection. The land at the back, belonging to IPHAN, has 2852 m2 area, with trees of various species, and is used for hosting and various activities of visitors.
